Even though this post is certainly related to Android and has Android elements, it's really more about Google Voice itself.

I signed up for Google Voice. Let's take the phone element out for now...because, like I said, even though it involves my phone, I don't think the problem is with my phone. Here's why: In this example, I should be getting a text message from Facebook. So, I have my Google number. It is set to redirect to my phone. I click to get the text from Facebook, but I get no text, either on the phone or in the Google Voice account. Any thoughts?

Google Voice does not accept short codes. Facebook texts are a short code, their number is like 404040 (actually that is Twitter's)

So, you need an actual # to get short code texts from, not Google Voice.

Does that make sense? I'll try to reword it if it doesn't.

No texting service has the ability to communicate with short code systems. Only true texting from your assigned mobile company phone number will accept them.
