Gosh, you guys are scaring me.

When I first saw the model in the store, I really didn't amaze me but it wasn't until a commercial for the S3 that I started paying attention. Since then I've read articles & watched countless reviews on Youtube. Never been much of a "techie" but when it's time to upgrade, best believe I'm on the hunt. I've been browsing this and Howard Forums for weeks now so two days ago I took the plunge and "preordered" my S3 online but it should be here tomorrow. It's safe to say I'm excited but now I'm also anxious.

I know that no phone is going to be absolutely "perfect" but from what I've heard the S3 is pretty amazing! However, after reading some of these posts I'm hoping it's worth it. Paint chipping around the edges, phone backs easily broken, audio and battery issues...etc. Well especially as a college student that's not what I just shelled out my $200 for! I decided to order directly from AT&T because I had some slight issues w/my BB from Amazon and when I got my HTC Inspire from the largest store in DC it had to be replaced 3x within the 1st month. I don't know how true the rumor is but I've heard of "favortism" with certain outlets and carriers. Obviously, I'm praying I don't end up w/a crappy model.

Has anyone noticed "favortism" and how is your S3 journey coming along? Do you see the S3 getting better over time once the hype and demand dies down? I mean that in the sense I got my HTC the week of release and the reps told me that's probably why the original model was faulty. Lastly, does any one have any suggestions as to what I can do to fully protect and maintain my phone so I won't be crying in the next month after it's too late to exchange?? I know this post is long but I appreciate all responses.

I love my S3, it's a great phone. Here comes the 'but'; it's just not the revolutionary step change up from my old S2 that I'd have liked. A lot of people i know still have their S2 s, and i'm finding that i quite miss mine. Before the S2 I had the original Galaxy S, which was intermittently laggy and buggy. The S2 is hugely better than the S, but the S3 is only incrementally better than the S2, and in some ways it's worse. There's no eyelet for a wrist strap like on the S2. The face is Gorilla Glass, but it's convex - it curves up towards the centre, which i suspect will mean it's not as robust as the flat S2 screen. The phone is just to big to use comfortably and securely one-handed, especially without a wrist strap. The S2's basic but handy video editing app is missing.

I could go on. In short; it's a fantastic phone, but i wish Samsung had kept more of the good things from the S2 and given a little more thought to ergonomics and practicalities.

Don't forget: Samsung have sold about 9,000,000 of these, and the number of complaints is miniscule compared to that number; and you are more likely to see complaints here than praise. If you are happy, you are less likely to post here. I am happier with my S3 than any other phone I have owned. (And I have the HTC One X too.)

Anything new gets a lot of negative comments from early adopters. It is no different for any new device. You need to go to the iPhone forum and look back when the 4S was introduced! There are still and always be people who just complain! The phone makers can NOT make everyone happy and there is no perfect phone for everyone.

The S3 is a great piece of hardware!

Exactly. If I started a thread titled "Everything is fine, no problems, sweet" I could potentially get 9,000,000 plus replies but it would be just so much padding.

Good point, well made. Most people seek help when they need it, too few come on to praise the goodness of their new phone, they are mostly busy putting all that goodness to great use.

However, good luck, I hope you don't get any major issues with your spanking new S3. If it's any encourament mines (international version) been flawless since I opened the box :D

Luck of the draw. You may or may not get a faulty unit. As for mine, the back cover is already starting to creak and I've only opened it once when I bought it and inserted the sim. At first, it was 100% tight but after more than 2 weeks of use with extra care, some parts of the back cover started to creak when pressed. I suggest, you buy the Otterbox Commuter and oh a screen protector too as it's not really scratch-resistant.

Get a case or bumper, with cover. Avoid keeping your phone in a back pocket or loose jacket pocket. Never give it to a kid to play with or 'look at', out without being seated in a living room or car for example, where if it does slip and fall, the car seat or sofa will 'catch it'. I follow these simple rules and usually keep my devices looking new for a year. I say a year because on average I change device every 6 to 12 months. I bore easily.
The S3 is great piece of tech. Very smooth, responsive, and fast. Call quality (after all it is a phone) is very good. As far as build, I personally don't think anything is as good as for example a BlackBerry Bold Touch 99xx, or iPhone 4x, they are very solid. Glass and aluminum just look and feel better than that plasticky finish Samsung uses for its phones. But their Market Research must show that it is a far less important factor influencing purchase preference than most of us may think. I just don't know why, and maybe it is for the above reason, but there is no metallic finished Android out there that is comparable to something like the iPhone (just an example). Hmm.
Among several elements that influence this decision, OS is an important one, if not the most critical. The latest numbers show almost 60% of the planet's Smartphone users want Android. Once you make that decision, then you decide on the device. No doubt the SGS3 is among the best. You made a great choice. Take care of it. I'll bet when the next iPhone is launched, it's specs will be comparable to the SGS3. Then again, Samsung is already working on the S4 or some other variant to hit Apple back ASAP.

OP, the build quality is subjective. It depends on your personal tastes. Some people agree with the poster above, some, like myself don't. I had the EVO LTE for a month and the build quality was good (as most HTC phones are). But, it was a bit heavier than the S3. I like the S3's build better because it's lighter in my pocket.

Again, OP, YMMV. Most of the people that post on forums complain or have a support question. You will find very few posts that say "I LOVE THIS PHONE!!! Who's with me? :)"

Thanks for the replies. I made sure I got a case before I even opened the box but just ordered a more protective one that looks to cover the silver trim. So far I haven't had any major issues. More than leary about the back cover though. Anybody come across any sturdier replacements. It was absolute torture dealing with my HTC Inspire and it's faulty software but it definitely has a better build vs the S3 which I find myself treating like a newborn baby.

Im glad you're replacing that inspire. I work for AT&T warranty and I can tell you how many we send back cuz of issues. Plus itsbjudt big and bulky. You'll love the s3. I've had for about 12 hours and it's been great. I'm upset that I didn't get the 32gb. My battery is doing pretty well and I've been using it non stop.
