I vaguely remembered "net alerts" from when I first got my i730, but they sucked so bad that I had to look them up just now:
Yep, you got it. If you're phone is MMS capable (they all have been since the i860 I believe), then texts come and go as MMS messages. Why do they do it this way? That's the million dollar question.
I haven't explored the text messaging functions of my i1 yet -- I've been too busy enjoying its real email. But MMS has gotta be in there somewhere, and you shouldn't need the old "net alert" mechanism.
BTW, I finally got around to trying text messaging on the i1 -- it's of course done via the "Messaging" app. Whatever you got via net alerts on your old phone, you should get this way now. Although email is still better, AFAICT (the MMS is slow!).
