GPS app for Droid 3 for use in Europe

I will be visiting Europe next week and would like to use Google Maps while traveling around each of the cities. However, due to the cost of data while roaming overseas, I cannot do this. I have heard about some apps that will allow my Droid 3 to act like my car's GPS by using pre-loaded (downloaded) maps while connected to the GPS satellites. Thereby, saving me money from using "live" maps like Google Maps. Can anybody make some suggestions on what they have used and what works best? I would like to pre-load points-of-interest with addresses, etc. and route to these locations. Also, since I will not have a car, are there any apps that will route using public transport options / walking much like Google Maps? Thanks in advance for your help!

Not a recommendation for a navigation app as such, as I just use Google maps at the moment, but Google maps will allow you to cache maps so they can be used off-line. A quick 'Google' and a 'search' on this forum should bring up how to do that. I don't believe that the 'cached' area is that great though. In which case you're looking at a nav. app that works totally offline. Co-pilot is one, for example, but a 'search' on this forum and online will bring up several others. They'll store the maps on your sd card and just need the GPS switched on.

It'd also help if you were more specific about where you are going. 'Europe' is not a single country - it is lots! Different map applications work better in various countries .....
