GPS app freezing brrrr...

I got an HTC Inspire a few months ago and was stoked with the navigation ability - using the native built-in google navigation. When I turned on the mobile network and gps, they came on right away. I then exchanged it for a Samsung Galaxy S II i777 for various reasons. When I turn on the mobile network and gps now, it takes a full two minutes to be even able to begin to use google nav. Then the gps spends 15 - 20 looking for satellites - this is in the suburbs of a big city with full access to the skies - and by then I struggled to find where I'm going on my own. Are there any tweaks or tricks to using this, or is it just sometimes useless?

I used it twice with good results. Now it initially comes up with the maps fairly quickly and then stalls, "searching for gps" and getting very hot. I let it do this for at least 20 minutes at a time recently. And it's using up my minimal data plan. This is a major bummer. I went by AT&T and they just shrugged it off. I took it to Best Buy where I got it, and they wanted to send it off for repair. They just had a 10 year old plain cell phone for a loaner, but said they may get a smart phone later. I may end up doing that. So I guess this is not a common problem?
