GPS App

Looking for a GPS app that will let me download maps and save them on my droid. That way if I'm ever in a place (like the mountains) where I don't have cell signal, my GPS can still function. Or if I want to use less data, I could download a map of the city I live in, so that the map was already there.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I remember seeing something like this for the blackberry curve but that was a couple years ago and that phone was not nearly as awesome as the droid.

Thanks!

The good news is that MapDroyd does just what you want. Although you can only download by states and not cities - there is support for Worldwide maps (USA, Canada and Europe are very good, the rest of the world is spotty). There is no navigation in MapDroyd so it will show you where you are, but no navigation.

The bad news is that if you don't have a cell signal your GPS probably won't work (my Droid doesn't :() -- most phones use a-gps and need a cell signal to assist the gps lockon process. I was hoping to use MapDroyd in Europe, but the GPS won't work. Of course, you can still use it like a "paper" map.

If you want navigation where there is no data, but you do have cell then you might consider Alk Co-Pilot, but that is a paid app.
