GPS in the wilderness ?

Norine

Lurker
Hello everyone,

Does anyone know a gps for the samsung galaxy S that could work in nature, hills, mountains etc and not just for roads ?

For instance when I used google maps, sometimes when I put a specific location it shows me a point on a road while the true location should be besides the road , km away in the grass.

Does mapdroyd is good this ?

Thank you in advance for any help ;

:)

GPS will work anywhere in the world. The problem is, apps like Google Maps require an internet connection to actually download the maps and map data. Apps like Google My Tracks will record your gps location where ever you go, but if you do not have a data connection, they will continue to log the gps data and download the maps when a connection is re-established.

+1 for ViewRanger.
Since I have ViewRanger installed on my Desire HD, my Garmin and my Satmap offroad navigators rest unused in the drawer :)

hello,
Tahnk you for your suggestion

I took a look on viewranger website and the gps doesn't cover all countries, they don't have eatern europe for instance.

Maybe do you have other suggestions ?

Thanks a lot.

There are some existing threads on this that you might want to refer to. I haven't paid attention to specific apps mentioned as I don't have a personal need for GPS apps like this.

Right. OP needs a GPS nav app that uses locally stored maps. And doesn't assume that the user is on a street like Google Maps/Nav does. "Hiking" might be a good keyword to use while searching as that's a common usage of such GPS nav apps.
