GPS navigation giving erroneous travel times

Any time I try to use the GPS to calculate travel time, it will give me times that are wildly inaccurate. Like for example a town nearby that I've driven to many times that I know is a 45-minute drive it tells me is an hour and 45 minutes. Another town that I know to be an hour and 20 minutes, it told me 2 hours and 10 minutes.

What gives? Is there any way to correct this?

What GPS map app are you using? Is it using real-time traffic updates for the route, like there might be a traffic jam holding things up? Also check you've got the correct mode of transport selected for the route, e.g. make sure it's driving rather than walking?

Google Maps. And yes, I checked those things.

I sometimes use Google Maps, I find it's not far off for travel time estimates, and that's even in China via a VPN.

Where in the world are you, what country?

California, in the US. And I've never had this issue in the two years I've owned this phone.

Have you also checked that your 'Route options' haven't somehow changed? In the UK that can make a significant difference in the travel time.

Oh boy. I'd somehow checked "avoid highways" in the route options.
