Never used an extended capacity battery, but 2 1/2 hours of Nav is a big energy suck...I'd expect the worst. On my Droid1 I had situations when using Nav and Pandora in the car and the Droid got so hot that it couldn't charge and would slowly lose battery even though connected to power.
The phone is constantly contacting with the satellite and the screen is on and moving the whole time. That will definitely suck the battery dry. I usually plug in the charger when using the navigation.
You should only need the gps if you are doing some turn by turn direction finding, like people do with the doc in their cars. And when you do that the phone is typically plugged in.
