gps - save track and routes

Is there anyway to store a route or track using the google maps on the g1. I have a garmin that when on automatically stores your route and it can be saved and uploaded to the computer. It seems logical that this would be available on the g1, as it has all the capabilties already available, ie gps and maps.

I can't find any mention of it or a way of doing this with existing software. It seems this would make for a very powerful tool if enabled.

What about being able to sync routes and tracks with google earth? I have seen the new application "my maps editor" , but it only enables you to manually place lines or shapes.

You don't say what kind of routes. For walking/running and perhaps cycling I quite like Cardiotrainer (http://www.worksmartlabs.com/cardiotrainer/). This generates routes which can be viewed on the previously-mentioned site and .kml files can be generated, downloaded and loaded into Google Earth.

For driving etc you might find GPS Tracker a bit kinder on your battery.

Both apps are in the Market.

1-click direction just released is pretty nice as it speaks directions to the user. I think saving these for offline use is partially possible. Probably a quick email to the dev would help ensure this is a feature that is more focused in the next release.

Great I'm in the middle of checking out the apps you listed.

You don't say what kind of routes.

I'm mostly interested in biking, hiking, outdoor where there likely wont be a data connection. The key here would be to be able to access stored maps from the phone offline.

The second question would be can i create a .kml or other track route in google earth and import it into any of these programs.

I was pondering this kind of application too. It could function much as an older Garmin or Magellan handheld GPS unit did, without data transmission.

For example, on an upcoming overseas trip, I would like to be able to mark where I parked the car, or where the hotel is, and then after an excursion around town, be able to use the GPS and have the G1 point me toward the stored point.

Having the device store data points for subsequent output to mapping programs would also be helpful.

This doesn't seem like it would be a difficult application to develop, and would be useful to people without using a data connection.

Ya, I use CardioTrainer too and its great with the gps features you're looking for. Like one of the other members, I use Cardiotrainer for hiking and running, but the cool thing is I can store my runs, view them on my phone or computer, share them on facebook, and then I get a lot of great stats that help me with my training!

i found their website the other day, here's a link... www.worksmartlabs.com/cardiotrainer/about.php
