GPS Test

Like others in other threads, Google Navigation is stuck on 'searching for GPS'. Ive run the app GPS test and similar and the best it can do is find one maybe 2 satellites after quite a length of time. Does this sound like a phone problem or a Google problem. Note that when I was in the Telstra shop, others had the same problem with Navigation, including on an iPhone so I'm not sure if there might be a 'temporary' problem with google. My wifes Nokia navigation works fine.
My phone was recently sent away to be repaired and when it came back it now has Android 2.2.2. Would this be a contributing factor?
Phone is Motorola Defy, my location is Southern South Australia. Would be interested to hear if anyone else is currently having this issue in my area.
There seems to be lots of suggestions around but no answers.

Have you tried GPS Status & Toolbox (Eclipsim)? I discovered this app when my phone's GPS suddenly stopped functioning for a few days though I ended up resolving it by doing a hard reset (recovery mode; the sequence of external buttons to press may differ for each phone) on my phone. It is different than a regular factory reset which did not resolve my issue since it is executed with the phone in a powered off state as opposed to a factory reset which is executed through Menu->Settings->Privacy, Factory Reset (or something similar) with the phone powered on.

Anyway, GPS Status allows you to reset the GPS cache and download aGPS data (menu->Tools->Manage aGPS Data, select 'Reset' and then repeat the steps and select "Download') to help your GPS get almanac data on the satellites. Go outdoors on a fairly clear day and make sure you're in a fairly open area with an unobstructed view of the sky. Turn on your GPS, launch GPS Status and reset the GPS cache and download the latest aGPS data. If GPS Status does not see satellites in view or get satellite locks after several minutes, <Home> out of GPS Status and launch Google Navigation (not Google Maps) as it uses GPS not wireless networks. Wait for about 10 minutes to see if you get a lock. If you don't get one then you may have to do a hard reset on your phone (make sure you remember to re-launch GPS Status again and use the <Back> key to properly exit the app.

Make sure you back up all your data (e.g SMS messages, call logs, voicemails, specific free app versions that you prefer (paid apps will be available once you log back onto the market), etc.). The SD card data will not be deleted though you should back it up for best practice. After the hard reset is completed and you have reloaded all your apps, moved apps to your SD, and applied your phone settings, you will have to repeat the same exercise with GPS Status and Google Navigation to regain GPS functionality. I try to use my GPS for a few minutes every other day (if not everyday) to ensure that my GPS is properly synched with the GPS Satellites' almanac data. I hope this helps.
