GPS waypoints app - NO MAP NEEDED!

Howdy,

I'm looking for a very simple application. I'm going trail riding (mountain bike) up in Canada, and I don't want to get lost on the trails.

I'm looking for a program like GPS STATUS that allows storage of multiple waypoints. GPS STATUS allows you to save a waypoint (but only one) and navigate back to it using distance and direction. I just want to be able to set a waypoint at every fork in the road, and navigate back to my starting point.

I won't have data access, otherwise I'd use Google maps or the HTC footprints app...those would work best IF I had data acces. There's probably something out there that fits my needs, but I've searched for hours and havn't found it yet.

Worst comes to worst, I can just use GPS STATUS and log each waypoint in a small notebook, but that's tedious.

P.S. I've looked at programs like TrekBuddy and AndNAV that allow you to use a downloaded offline map. Anybody used these? If so, would they work for my purposes (trails, not roads)? I might try the beta version of Back Country Navigator also.

Thanks in advance.

Two suggestions.
1. If it is highly important that you have the track/waypoint data available (you will be in unfamiliar territory, unmarked routes/trails, etc.), then a regular GPS and/or paper maps and a compass would be recommended (both in fact).
2. There is at least one GPS mapping app out there that includes it's own maps (don't need the on-line connection for the maps). Don't know if it includes any parts of Canada though, and don't recall the name.

I can highly recommend Maverick too as Bad Daddy mentioned.

You can pre-download areas of maps using your computer onto your phone and work off-line. Choose the zoom levels and area of coverage. The software downloads all the tiles and you copy them onto your SD card. It can download a variety of maps (including google terrain), so will definitely cover Canada.

You can now switch off your data stream and the maps will load from the SD card. I haven't went pro yet, but I will when I need it.

I tried the free one and it worked a dream. However, it only lets you save 5 tracks.

As a side note, Maverick will cache any tiles that you are viewing via your data stream to the SD card. If you lose signal then it will use the tiles it has saved to display instead of just showing a blank canvas. :)
