...and, I take it, you're not too keen on incurring roaming charges caused by Google Maps downloading live data? In that case I'd recommend MapDroyd which is based on OpenStreetMap data and requires/allows you to download maps for the regions you're interested in. It's a free app, but obviously can be rather heavy. The quality is quite okay (last I tried it, some months ago).
