Fans of large phones would point to the Galaxy Note series as introducing the phablet concept, which led to other Android manufacturers and eventually Apple following suit. Last year's longer screen, smaller bezel development also began in the Android world. To be honest I'd regard both of those as more significant than screen resolution.
Water resistance was first introduced into mainstream handsets by Sony (not Samsung, as I've read several ignorant tech blogs say in the last year, they came to it a whole release cycle later). Even Apple have now caught on to that one.
The openness of the Android system, which allows you to choose your own style of home screen UI (even down to replacing the launcher app), is something you don't find in other platforms. We don't even give it any thought, because it's been there from the start.

I dunno about that: glass is still glass, and GG can still shatter. I cracked a GG3 screen a few years back (admittedly dropping from shoulder height onto cobbles only producing a crack is not bad for glass, but it's not invulnerable).

No, what I meant is that I don't have to worry about scratches, haven't seen those bad boys on my phones with GG3 and above. I'm aware that the more brittle the glass is the more it become more shatter prone but I haven't really drop a phone for a very long time now but that's also because I don't use my phone while walking down the street or with a cup of coffee or something on one hand.
I'm the opposite on that: I barely care about scratches, but cracks would be an annoyance and shatters a real pain. In fact I never had a scatch problem prior to Gorilla Glass, and GG5 (used by all 2017 flagships) is actually easier to scratch than GG3 or even the glass used on my 2010 HTC Desire (which pre-dated Gorilla Glass). That statement is based on personal experience, not reviews or manufacturers' claims.
For me one-handed use is my norm, and though I've never used a tempered glass protector with any previous phone, and only once cracked a screen (and never shattered), I have with this one for that reason. However I don't have one currently because I got fed up with the poor adhesion at the edges - I just wish someone would make a good one for the Pixel 2...
