Help Groups in Contacts

pewe

Newbie
I have a Laptop, a tablet and a phone and like to keep the contacts and calendar on all three in sync.

On the Laptop I use Thunderbird and the tablet and phone are both running Android 4.1.2.

To sync them I use Owncloud running on hosted web space.

Everything works smoothly apart from one item - the Contact Groups.

I can add a new contact in Thunderbird or in Owncloud and at the time I create them I can allocate a 'group' which syncs to the android devices so I am able to view contacts in groups on the tablet and phone.

The problem I have is that there appears to be nowhere to allocate a 'Group' to any new contact I add on my phone or tablet.

Is there any way anyone knows of to allow me to
- add new groups in Android and/or
- allocate a contact to a group at the time of creating them in Android???

Or is this a fundamental flaw in the Android contacts system?

The standard Android Contacts app allows creation of new groups or assigning a contact to a group while creating a new contact or editing existing ones.

So, what am I missing here...

Not on mine it seems:(.

The fields I have are -

Name
Phonetic Name
Organisation
Phone
Email
Address
Events
Relationship
IM
Notes
Nickname
Website
contactcreate.png

I can't see anywhere to add 'Group' or 'Category' or anything similar.

If you had a screen shot of your input that would be useful.

That is not the standard Android Contacts app. I don't know what kind of phone you have, but that appears to be a proprietary contacts app included by the manufacturer. Very odd that groups are not included.

Unfortunately, AFAIK the standard Android Contacts app is not available separately. I can only suggest that you check out the Play Store for a contacts app that includes groups like the stock Android app does. I don't know of one offhand, I've always just used the Android app, but I'm sure some do.

Strange that - both the devices were bought at different times and have different manufacturers.
One is a Phone running 4.1.1 and the other a tablet dunning 4.1.2.

I had a quick look on play store and couldn't find anything suitable - but will have to search more closely I guess.

Just checked a 3rd device - also an android phone of yet another manufacturer - running 4.2.2, and the contacts app is the same - no group ability ?????

can you try this app: group its adds a group feature on the phonebook menu, maybe it will work with your device and solve your problem.

At first this looked like a potentiall good answer - but unfortunately it is very buggy - shows group totals that have no relevance to the actual number of contacts in the groups

Shame :(

My Mistake.
It got confused because some Google Groups that I sync'd with in the past had the same name as some Groups I had set up myself and the app got confused.
I removed the Google groups and now it works perfectly.
Thanks for the heads up about the app :thumbsupdroid:
