So, I'm torn on which phone to upgrade to. Right now the X is still the powerhouse of the VZW lineup, and I don't feel like waiting to find out what changes as far as data plans when they drop an LTE phone on us. The thing is, the X is just huge. I mean, I can deal with it... but it's a big phone.

Important criteria to me are battery, call reception (signal strength, but not the stupid meter :P) and the ability to install/customize ROM images and the like.

Is there really anything to consider other than the X? Is the Fascinate even close?

The X really isnt as big as it seems once you get used to it. Not once have I ever thought, this phone is just too big for me. And I came from the BB Storm.

I've thought that about the Droid a couple of times, though. Of course, the Eris is just too small... I should prolly not be so picky, I guess. I wonder how long it will be before Android phones can be assembled from components and an OS installed just like desktops? There are certainly enough places out there still where you can customize laptops...

The Droid Incredible is smaller and, once rooted, you can install sense-less ROM's if your objection is to Sense. I like it, myself, but I did root and install a sense ROM (Virtuous 3.1) which, while running SetCPU to underclock, gives me fantastic battery life.

The X (as well as the Fascinate and HTC Evo) are just too big for my preferences.
