I recommend anyone switching to an android phone to have a corporate carrier store back up your contacts to your memory card on their Cellebrite machine. The contacts can only be retrieved from your memory card by returning to the store again, but until you get your own good backup going, this may be your only salvation if you are getting rid of the old phone like I did.
Ok. Luckily I have my contacts backed up on a Sprite Backup program, which is only readable on my old windows mobile device, so I can move them over tomorrow at work. Having this happen to me is ironic because I always encourage all my smart phone customers to back up their device to the PC. That is why a phone comes with a data cable. Carry a smart phone, be smart enough to back it up, and then I have my contacts wiped out prior to backing up my data, MAN!!
I will now encourage customers to let me back up their contacts to their memory card on the store's cellebrite machine in case they mess up their phone like I did mine. I think it was the Tube Loader app that I had downloaded, but maybe not. I just did a full erase (hard reset) and the phone is working great again.
