if i could i would go as far as naming Handcent my/the default sms handling app for androids of all kinds.
this application has it all from different types of vibrations for the notifications to different themes for the messages and a whole lot in between. it can go very deep for those that like to adjust each and every setting or it can be as simple as installing then letting it do its job.
now it terms of rating i don't think star ratings can express just how good of an application this can be, but for me its an easy 5/5 it's visually pleasing while having the buttons/softkeys placed in great places and for once its an app that doesn't sacrifice usability for these looks
Now every app(or anything for that matter) has its drawbacks. This app is a little power hungry and in turn does seem to make it lag a bit on some of the older devices such as the dream or magic.
When you first install it you have to disable the vanilla sms handler's notifications or you will get multiple notifications for a single message which does get rather annoying
For the best results. combine the Handcent widget, which shows you on the widget itself the number of unread messages, With the sms pop up ,which lets you reply(or quick reply as they call it) from a locked state(though the reply from lock may or may not work on every device)or while doing just about anything else. up to and including browsing the web
until i find anything better to me this is part The Android experience!
