how do i revert to the previous version of 'Handcent SMS', the latest version is rank
 
You should be able to uninstall the updates through your application manager. Without knowing your specific device I cannot tell you exactly how to get there as the menus differ slightly.

However, once you get into the application manager, find the Handcent app, there should be an "unistall update" option.

I would contact Handcent about your issues with their current version, they should be able to provide you with a resolution.
