Hangouts in low bandwidth environment

Any of you guys use Hangouts extensively? My parents are currently in Europe and we attempted to do a video call with them over crappy hotel WiFi and the video was extremely choppy. They were using an iPhone 4, I'm on Nexus 5. We switched over to Skype and that worked perfectly fine. I'm kind of surprised because all reviews I've seen of Hangouts for iOS are positive, I would expect Hangouts to be on par with Skype even in low bandwidth scenarios. I've used hangouts in the past with my wife who has an iPhone 5 and it has always been perfectly fine, although we've never been in a very low bandwidth scenario in the past. I am wondering if it's a fluke or is this common. I hate having Skype on when Hangouts does everything I need day to day.

In my experience, using hangouts in iOS (iPad), a nexus 5, OSX, and windows, hangouts does a fairly good job of adjusting bandwidth to match what throughput you have available to you. I'm not entirely sure why you had so many issues, but I can say that usually when I have "low" bandwidth it's not exactly what most people would consider slow (2-5 Mbit).

Yeah I didn't have to get them to run bandwidth tests or anything like that. I just know we jumped right off and got on Skype and it worked no problem. I hope to try again and see how it goes.

Please do. The reason I switched from hangouts to skype (aside from convenience) was that hangouts tended to work much better for me in most situations, where skype would have issues with dropping or lagging audio or terrible video
