Anyone know how to get a counter on the Google hangouts?

Apex Notifier, which is free but requires the Pro version of the Apex Launcher. For this to work with Hangouts, you must be running Android 4.3 or higher. HTH ...

Depends on launcher. Nova Prine launcher can also do this.
