How do you do it? Do you have to set up your phone again? Is it the same as a factory reset?

Hard reset & factory reset are the exact same thing.................
Whether or not you choose to restore your apps/data from backups,or,start anew by manually setting up again is the only difference.

I had to reset after MM due to a theme being stuck.
I copied the storage partition to my PC, used smart switch for settings, SMS, and to my surprise it also backed up the storage partition. I also used helium to backup my app data, though it doesn't work for all apps.
