Help *hardware questions* how can it have so much RAM?

How can a smartphone have so much memory?

With the latest 2015 phones touting 3 and 4 GB of RAM on a single chip, I'm wondering how this is possible and the device still remain cost effective?
I remember when 4gb of RAM took up 8 or 16 ICs on a full sized DIMM stick! I know a phone doesn't have that many IC chips. Where is the space for all that hardware at?

Think about it. 10 years ago, the biggest flash drive can only store like 2GB of memory. Now microSD can store 128GB of files. Same thing.
