Help Having issues with putting movies such as mp4 on phone!

Hey there,

I just recently made the move to the Note 4 after having the iPhone models for along as I can remember! I much prefer the Note 4 and so far have been happy in the short weeks I have had it.

However I am come across an issue that I have spent a huge amount of time trying to resolve without an resolution! Therefore thought would ask here! I bought a 128gb memory card just after I purchased this phone and big point of me doing that was so I could put a lot of movies and tv shows on it. I have downloaded a huge collection of movies (all in small sizes of just under 700mb each). Now I thought it would just simply be the case of loading them all onto the memory card and job done! Boy was a wrong as its been nothing but a headache since....apparently for whatever silly reason android phones don't seem to like mp4 files after doing some research online.

Now I have been to countless articles and suggestions, most state you basically have to covert them (which would be fun when I have 110 files ready to put on). Now if it REALLY had to come to that then I would do that over a huge period of time that it would take me but 1) surely there should be a much more logically solution to this? BUT worst if the converting is the only option, I still can't seem to get it to work as already gave a test video a go! I have used handbrake, fassoft, anymp4 test trial software and it still doesn't work!!!
I have done everything it says and selected android, even tried the option for standard android settings and another one for note but still it doesn't work when its put on my memory card. The best I get is the video appears to work initially after converted and play on the phone but then after 10 seconds starting playing up/going fuzzy and then the lovely message of "Unable to play video, sorry the video cannot be played!.

So naturally I am at my wits end of having no clue why something that really should be so simply is giving me so grief. If anyone with the note 4 or similar type of phone that has had this issue could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with this. I have no problems playing mp4 vids on my N4. I can play full downloaded videos moved from my PC to my SD card, and also any I've converted on my PC from other formats (using Aunsoft, Handbrake). They all play flawlessly, and with subtitles to boot for some Jdramas.

Since you say the vids actually play then start messing up, could it be some background syncing going trying to sync while the vids are playing? What happens if you disable your 4g and wireless and then play the videos? Also, do you have any real-time antivirus/malware scanner that might be scanning your vids while you're attempting to play them?

Sorry, can't really think of anything else to try since I don't see your problems on my phone. My N4 is stock so I'm just using the player it came with. Good luck!

Hi Justin,

I also play mp4 files all the time on my note using my 128GB SD card as a source and even stream them from my NAS flawlessly (ES File Explorer is great from browsing network drives BTW). All of my files were converted from my own VHS/DVDs using a screen cap tool or handbrake.

I, however, do not use the stock media player as I have grown used to MX Player (free from Google Play Store). So you may want to give that a try.

Regards,
Eric.

If MX Player doesn't work then your .mp4 files may in reality be .m4p files which can only be used on Apple phones. The file extension can still be mp4 but in reality they are DRM protected.for use on Apple products. I don't know of a workaround. I too convert my own DVDs.

I have now discovered that they seem to play exactly 11 videos in mp4 without any problem at all but where the problem seems to start is when anymore is loaded on there. I assumed this must be a memory card issue but have purchased another one and even thou this one is better, it does a similar thing.....lets me put on exactly 24 videos before letting anymore play. If I load more videos that I said (24) the other don't show any imagine and show the time as 0. Any suggestions on what is going on here? Does videos somehow get restricted on settings or anything like that as this is just getting bizarre. Thanks

Justin
