Help Having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi Network

I'm new to the smartphone world having just upgraded to a droid razr maxx. I've been trying to connect to a wifi network so I don't have to use my data but am having trouble connecting to one. I know the basics I click on "settings." I then click on "wireless & networks." I then click on "wi-fi" to turn wi-fi on. I then click on "wi-fi settings and then choose a wi-fi network to connect to. When I click on a wi-fi network for example "mjj home" it asks for a password because it's a secured network.

This is where I'm confused what exactly is the password??? Do I create a password? When I click on mjj home network I see the following: Security WPA/WPA2 PSK. I've tried entering WPA/WPA2 PSK into the password field and it tells me I've entered an incorrect password. I would appreciate if someone can tell me what to enter into the password field when I click on a secured wi-fi network...thanks!

No one can tell you what your password is. If we could, passwords would be worthless. When you setup the router you probably either:

A. Set a password and forgot it or...
B. Didn't set a password in which case it might be still be a generic, default factory-set password.
C. It's not your router and you need the owner to give you the password.

If A you will have to wipe and reset the router to out-of-the-box condition.
If B you obviously need the default password.
Either way, the manual should help.
If C ask the owner.

Someone at Verizon told me I need to setup a wireless network to get wi-fi. I'll then be able to create a password. I assumed since I have a computer connected to the Internet that automatically gave me wi-fi which apparently isn't the case. I was told if I stay at a hotel that has wi-fi I would need to get a password from the hotel to connect to wi-fi would anyone know if that's correct? I'm new to all this wi-fi stuff but I'll get it figured out.

wifi is just a router. when you have internet, you buy a router and attach it to your internet modem. that router has a radio that transmits a wifi (internet signal through air). it doesn't usually go outside your house/hotel/building. depending on the power of the router

so yes to get wifi, you have to buy a router. set it up with your internet modem. and it is best to set a modem. because even though signal doesn't go outside your house, sometimes it does and your neighbors can access your router and get free internet.

and yes most hotels give you a wifi name and password in the hotel room. so when you use your wifi on phone, you connect to that certain wifi connection (youll know the name). when it asks for the password you type in the password. if the password is wrong you won't connect to wifi. if the password is right the wifi connection will work.

hope this helps. I and most people here have probably been using wifi for almost a decade. so I tried to explain it to you in real laymans terms but not sure if I did.

Appreciate your help thanks for dumbing everything down for me because that's about the only way for me to understand all this. I'm so far behind on technology it's ridiculous. For example last year a friend told me he had a blackberry and I told him he better go have it checked to make sure it isn't cancerous. lol Let me ask you this once I buy a router how exactly do I set it up with my internet modem?

yep that link explains everything. by the way, i meant to say 'set a password'** not 'set a modem'
