Headphones.... AGAIN!

I have now tried Klipsch si3 in ear headphones and some Sennheiser HD419 closed back ones. All of them have failed me by giving up in one ear! I don't think I am particularly rough with them and certainly the last pair I took great care with as my past experiences were not good!

Can anyone recommend some TOUGH over ear headphones that are not wildly expensive? Preferably with some sort of control and mic so I don't have to keep fishing my phone out of my pocket like I did with the last pair!

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me.

(I'm in the UK by the way.)

Hi dalesponyrider,

I've moved your thread into our Accessories subforum where I hope it will get a bit more traffic (and thus a better response). In the meantime, you may wish to browse through this thread, in which Twister has posted a lot of reviews of headphones and other accessories.

Happy hunting! :)

Since you are having a problem with one earcup, most likely it's your cable. That's a most common root cause of these problems :) Klipsch makes ok in-ears, but cable connection is not as durable. HD419 is build better, but perhaps that angled cable attachment might not be as reliable. Could be just your bad luck, or maybe when you store your headphones the cable gets bent too much?

What is your absolute max budgets, what is your phone to drive these, and what type of music you listen to? You really have two choices to resolve "cable" issue. Either go wireless (bluetooth) or get a pair of headphones with detachable cables so you can swap them. Quality wireless headphones can run up in price, while a cheaper chinese ones will work OK but not the build quality (for example something like THIS). The same with detachable cables, to bring the price down a lot of them cut some corners. For in-ear with detachable cables and a decent build your best bet would be Shure SE215 (85-99 pounds), those they have stronger bass which is OK for edm/pop/rock/hip-hop, but maybe not as much if you mostly listen to jazz and classical. For over-ears on a budgets, I would recommend ATH-M50 (109 pounds) - those are build like a tank, though cable is attache. If you add 16 pounds to it, you will get a newly released ATH-M50x with 3 different detachable cables.

If you want a cable with in-line controls/mics, Shure uses the same mini coaxial connector as UE and Westone, so you can get one of those replacement cables like the one I tested here: http://androidforums.com/android-ac...ue900-headphones-w-lots-pics.html#post6256912

For 3.5mm replacement cable, you can look into something like this: http://androidforums.com/android-ac...ble-w-remote-mic-samsung-htc-w-lots-pics.html but I'm not sure if its going to work with M50x since I read it has a lock on the connector going into earcup.

In my opinion, if you want to invest into a pair of headphones with a great balanced sound, build like a tank, removable cable, in-line controls, and smaller design (on-ear which is smaller than over-ear) - you might want to check out V-Moda M-80: http://androidforums.com/android-ac...-80-headphones-v-moda-faders-w-lots-pics.html - a lot more expensive but try to break these LOL!!! Plus you get a detachable cable and awesome storage case. V-Moda Crossfade LP is the same build like a tank, removable cables, but its bigger over-ears like Senns you had, and a nice storage case for 1/2 of M-80 price. But they are bass heavy, not as much clarity in upper mids.

When it comes to high quality wireless, highly recommend LG Tone+ HBS-730, you can get it now for under 50 pounds since a more pricier HBS-800 is released (I will be reviewing it soon). http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...tone-hbs-730-stereo-bt-headphones-w-pics.html

Lots of choices ;)

Wow, thank you so much for your detailed reply Twister6! The phone I have is a Nexus 4. What I listen to mostly are radio 4 podcasts while I am plodging around in the mud looking after my scruffy Dales ponies. So it would be good to have something tough that let's me keep my phone in my pocket. I also listen to a huge variety of music from my son's electro (he is one half of Eskimo Twins and also the whole of Heretic) to opera, classical, and just about everything in between! I really need some headphones at about

Hi all,
I am new to Android. Just bought Motorola Droid Mini and can't find ear bud headphones with mic+player control skip/back+volume control together. Any suggestions?

The problem with motorola, their jack is wired differently for volume +/- controls. So any recommended headset with a full android control will only work for you by using their universal multi-function button to play/pause/call and skip track controls, but no volume. I tested a few of my headphones with Moto X and volume didn't work. This means you can use any headset with iPhone or Android controls since they multifunction button always work android phones.

Or better yet, for $23 you can get these Meelec M9P with multifunction button and a volume slider!!! This way you will have a universal volume control: Amazon.com: MEElectronics M9P Flat Cable In-Ear Headphone with Headset Functionality and Universal Volume Control, Second Generation (Red): Electronics

Twister, my Dad is giving me an early birthday present and putting some money towards some V Moda 80s! I hope they are as good as you say! One question, I've ordered through Amazon from "thebookcommunity_fba" It seems that although I am in the UK they are coming from US? They say all their electronic equipment has US plugs. I'm thinking this doesn't matter with headphones, I have a UK Nexus 5, will they be ok do you think?

Many thanks,

Linda

Electrical only, this is audio plug and its universal :) Btw, do you know V-Moda just announced XS version of M-80? It has similar on-ear design but they are foldable like M-100. I should get a review unit soon. But they are going to be more expensive (around $229). That is a reason M-80 dropped in price. I'm sure you will enjoy your M-80, great sound, build like a tank, and quality replaceable cables!

Received my V Moda headphones today. Realise now that the port on my phone isn't working! Headphones sound bloody marvellous on other equipment but don't work on my Nexus 4! Where is the best place to get my phone repaired? I live in the UK in Lincoln!

Sorry to hear that, m8. I would recommend going to N4 section of AndroidForums and asking if anybody can recommend a good repair shop. Maybe ask it in N5 section as well. I know we have a lot of members from UK on AF. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a recommendation.

A bit off-topic. Was in a local mall this afternoon, and see a stand right in the middle to repair/replace smartphone displays. For around $100 or so they replace right on a spot any cracked screen. Amazing! Where there is a demand, there going to be a supply :)
