Root Hello everyone...been a looong time

Quick question...I have tried searching but no luck, as I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

In short, my GS5 has been a nightmare since Lollipop, something went wrong with the OTA. Sprint is no help, so i'm rooting it. I haven't rooted a phone since my HTC Evo, so I'm a little rusty.

This thing is so buggy and messed up, I want to really, really, REALLY wipe it when I root it. Like erase everything, start from scratch. I'm envisioning a freshly formatted and 100% empty device that I install all new software from the ground up. Is that possible, or even necessary?

Thanks,
-HN

Crap I forgot...

Samsung GS5, Sprint, stock SM-G900P running 5.0

Hi Huge Noob!

Lets see if we can help you out...

1. Have you tried wiping your phone's cache partition, as per #1.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

2. Try re-flashing the stock Samsung firmware for your model of phone and CSC and Product code, (there are 4 different firmwares for the G900P model, depending on your Product code). See #1.8 of 41 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide for how to obtain these. See #1.11 of the aforementioned guide for instructions and video, in the links, on how to flash the firmware.

3. To root the Sprint, G900P, you will need to follow the instructions in, [SM-G900*] CF-Auto-Root

Grab a coffee and start reading! ;)

Hey ironass.....thanks for replying

I should have mentioned this....yes I've done that, several times in fact. I even went so far as wiping my phone and doing a full factory data reset, still no help.

Something went wrong went the 5.0 OTA hit my phone. I was great up until then, best phone I'd ever had. I've been down to the Sprint store, their techs have reworked it, cleaned caches, etc. I have wiped the caches, uninstalled several apps, Nothing helps.

That's why I want to really wipe this sucker...all the way, to the bone. I don't fully understand the android file system, but I'm wanting to do the Android equivalent of "Format C:/" and start over

Thanks!

I'm back..just completed a full wipe, factory data reset with an SD card format, and I re-flashed the firmware.

So, now we wait and see if there's improvement

I think there is some improvement.... Hard to tell this early on, but the phone seems to be holding battery power better. There's definitely less locking up and freezing going on, so that's good.

Thanks again ironass for the recommendations.... But now that I see how easy Odin is, I may as well root it and play with it...

Ok, maybe still having issues.... Look at this screenshot... Am I reading this correctly? I'm thinking this is showing my OS taking up 12GB or so of my internal memory...

Better screenshot. Here's the exact distribution of what's going on with my OS. I used an app called Storage Analyzer.

So, is my OS within acceptable parameters, or is this an issue?

Looks about right. 11.32GB left after the firmware is reasonable. I have 11.98GB left after the OS on a 16GB memory.
