Hello from a First Time Android User

Hello!

I finally took the plunge and went from iPhone to Android - got a cool Huawei Mate 10 Pro! So far I love the screen, the cameras and a few other things, but it's going to take some time to get used to the Android world and how it works.

Cheers!

Hi @1stTimeAndroider :) Glad you found us.

If you ever get stuck, please feel free to ask. Even though we've had many iPhone>Android conversations, we don't mind answering the same questions, or pointing you to the answers.

I hope you have a positive Android experience!

I have owned eight android devices starting with the Motorola cliq and now owning an LG G6. I remember going to tmobile back in 2009 because the wife and I needed new phones. I wanted a simple flip phone. The sales representative started in something called android phones, the wife knew a little bit about them. I was clueless, I probably didn't really start paying attention to the whole android, app thing thing till I moved to the nexus 4.

My wife's aunt switched from the iPhone 3 or 4 to Android in 2016. She's in her 70's and didn't want to spend a few hundred for a new iPhone. She got a Samsung device for under $200. All she does is call and text people

Thanks all for your warm welcome! To be decided on whether Android is the light side or the dark side, though! lol

Let me think.. consumers not ripped off on prices, more open system, more choice, loads of features, allows rooting, not locked into one vendor's ecosystem. Struggling to see a dark side here :D

I'm currently having a lot of troubles with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro - the model was purchased from China and I'm in North America. It cannot download any apps from Google Play, the default apps cannot be uninstalled, and rooting it requires first registering a Huawei ID that doesn't recognize North American phone numbers.....

And apparently it's a Google thing: https://www.techmesto.com/google-play-store-download-error-404/

So, really it's not as open as I thought.

The problem as @Dannydet points out is that the device was bought from China where Google is blocked. Perhaps @mikedt can find a solution for you, but honestly as a 1st time Android user, I'd see if you could return it and buy something for the US market.

Basically Google is outlawed in China, while Android itself is open source. And so Android devices intended for sale and use in the PRC do not have anything Google on them, like Google Play.

I cannot return it as it is a gift and I live in Canada. However, I've found a way around it. I downloaded Aptoide and pretty much all the apps I use can be downloaded from there.

I'm still on the learning curve though, as I'm looking for apps like email and calendar to replace the stalk apps. I'm also looking into anti-spyware and antivirus apps (which I didn't feel the need/bothered to install when I had an iPhone).

Be careful if you are installing apps from whatever unofficial sources, you might need to be extra vigilant for trojans and malware in apps and games. Which you shouldn't have to if it had Google Play on the phone, like iPhones have the iTunes Store. Malwarebytes or Lookout I believe are the recommended ones, but even be careful of where you're downloading that from.

I know Apkmirror is one source of apps and games, that is recommended and should be safe. Amazon Appstore should work on this phone as well.
