Root Help a noob root? Please?

Forgive any and all previous posts, I sounded like an idiot. After some additional research, I may know more about the subject, or at least I think I do...

I have discovered my LG Spectrum 1 has the 4.0.4 which I believe is the ICS everyone is talking about, as it came stock with the phone, I think it's the OTA ICS.

My desire is to root my phone for performance, battery life, customization, and not have a brick. There seems to be some debate as to if CWM should be installed or not as it will cause the phone to brick. Is this because the phone is older and I'm just coming in the game late after the ICS flashing phase on GB? Or is there concern for the OTA ICS being bricked with CWM? Also, does this have anything to do with the unlocking of the bootloader?

The all in one [Updated 11-20-12][BOOTLOADER][Windows][VS920]Bootloader Pwnage Tool for the LG Spectrum 4G thread is what I believe to be the most current and safest tool, I just can't afford a brick the phone due to a lack of knowledge on my part. From what I understand, this tool will root, unlock the bootloader, and flash CWM, but is this what I need to do? I also wish to create a nandroid backup just in case the worst should happen, but CWM seems to be the route to go there from other posts.

Sorry for the lengthy post, just concerned about conflicting information on some threads and too much of a chicken to just try and see how it works! Thank you in advance if anyone can help me!

The good news is that it's *almost* impossible to brick this phone. Running the Pwnage tool is about the riskiest step (since it replaces the recovery partition) and the guys who put it together made sure that every precaution possible was taken to prevent that.

...actually, I think you could even recover from a corrupt recovery partition by using LG's update software.

I've had my phone near-bricked more times than I care to admit and it's never been anything an all-nighter of reading this forum couldn't fix.

As far as I understand it, the recovery partition actually has nothing to do with LG's update tool for CAB flashing. Though, I don't know which partition actually houses the code that launches/handles download mode (assuming that it's not hardcoded onto an eeprom somewhere or something).

Personally, I don't even use CWM anymore. I much rather TWRP. So far I haven't hit any snags running it. I can definitely say that my b-hole clenched the first flash I did while trying to port that over :p

Not to derail this thread or anything... But...

Yeah, I got 2.5.0.0 running correctly (at least nobody's reported that it isn't). I know USB Mass storage works in ubuntu and windows for me.

Here's the link in case you wanted it since it ended up getting buried in discussion/testing.

Partition mmcblk0p7 (Aboot) contains all the info for launching download mode or choosing to boot into either the kernel or recovery. You mess that up and your phone is a brick. Any other partition is fixable as long as you can get into download mode and have enough time/patience to fix it.

Just for the record you guys are awesome, so far so good as I'm successfully rooted, using some cpu tweaks, running juice defender and auto killer optimizer, with lux brightness tool and have gone from crap stock with a 2 hr charge at best to a tweaked stock that performs and easily a 9 hr charge with those changes! Never could have managed without all the help! Now that I'm here, is there anything else i should do now that I'm rooted (besides the super intense stuff, I'm not quite there yet )?

Run v6 supercharger script by zeppelinrocks. A quick Google search will lead you to the right place ;)
