Help (Help)Activate Device Administrator

Liv4fishn

Lurker
Hopefully someone can help me with this issue.

I just did the JB update and my "company email" account is asking for permissions to activate device administrator. I receive my company emails on my personal phone. This is NOT a company phone.

However when I look at the permissions it wants me to grant when activating the device administrator it appears that my company will be able to basically control just about everything and anything on my phone, including locking my device, requiring a pin to use my device and deleting all of my info, pictures contacts etc etc.

I was NEVER asked to activate this prior to installing the update so I highly doubt this is something coming from my company today.
When I decline the activation the notification goes back to my notification bar and I can't remove it. It appears that unless I agree to allow it the notification will stay on my top bar.

Is there a way to remove this request?
Am I correct in my presumptions about what this "device administrator" can do If I agree to it?
I also assume that it is completely legal for them to monitor my phone if I agree to this permission.

Does your company use Gmail based email? If so you may be in luck. The company I work for has a similar device policy.

ps. yes, you are correct in what most device policies allow. your phone can be wiped at any time a full factory rest with data wipe........

Thanks for the replies and answers. Unfortunately I had/have no choice if I want my companies email to push through to my phone.

no, your options are to accept it or to remove the account. it's a JB security feature. yes, "feature" is subjective.

you are correct in your assumptions on what the admins can do. you are not correct in what they will do, however. ask your IT department about their policy on work email on personal devices. if it's a small company, they probably don't care and you can ignore it because they're not going to require anything extra anyway. if it's a larger corporation, you're going to get pushback, just like with everything they do.

as for the legality? couldn't tell you. i would assume that you giving them permission means they've got their asses covered.

i attached my company email to my phone, and didn't get this warning, even post JB. though, i didn't use the "corporate" option , i used the "other" option. maybe try setting it up through that?

I ran into this same issue the other day. Instead of using Exchange ActiveSync, I set it up as IMAP and get company push messages without the hassle of dealing with draconian permissions from device administrator.
