Help Help! Have I internally damaged my phone?

Lurker
Last night I fell asleep while playing a youtube downloaded video on my Samsung A8 (older version). While sleeping I accidentally pushed the phone under the pillow. When I woke up after about six hours, the phone was super hot and making a weird whirring sound (not too sure about the sound since I'm half asleep). I quickly turned off the phone. After about 3 hours I turn it back on again. While turning it on, I have notice it getting hot which has never happened before. So I turned it off again. I am worried that I have overheated my phone and may have internally damaged it. How do I fix it if that happens.

If you have heat damaged it you can't fix it other than by replacing whatever components are damaged.

A phone should shut down before it gets to that point, of course. Maybe give it a little longer. I once thought I'd cooked a laptop which had failed to go to sleep, but it was ok the next day.

So should I just keep it turned off for a few days? I don't know if it'll aggravate the phone more but I charged it a little while ago since it was almost 20 % and turned it off again.

I don't think it should need days. If a few more hours at ambient temperature doesn't do it then I can't think of much more. Perhaps if you slow charge it next time (just a random thought that that would reduce heating, nothing more).

Actual heat damage done to electronic circuitry is irreversibly cumulative, if your phone's internals were already 'cooked' it won't make any difference or improvement waiting for everything to cool down as they are already done in. If your phone is too hot it won't start up anyway, but even after waiting several minutes if it still won't start up, don't bother waiting several hours more as this won't magically 'heal' any damaged components, they have already either completely failed or will function very erratically.

You might want to take this phone to a local service shop and have it evaluated. If they recommend doing something like replacing the motherboard, keep in mind this phone could also be damaged in other ways -- burned through insulation, or failing solder joints, or any other heat related issues could also be a factor in this phone's longevity.
This being a relatively new model, you must have received it recently. Take a look through any warranty or guarantee documentation to see if you can get a replacement or at least a discount (downplay the falling asleep with it under your pillow part of course).

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if it acts up again when I get home.

Hmmm I see. I'll keep that in mind if it continues to heat up. I might need to replace the phone since it was bought 4 yrs ago so waranty probably won't cover the damage. Although, I was hoping that wouldn't be the case.

Actually, the phone can still start up. It's just that it immediately emits heat even without opening any apps. The amount of heat is comparable to using the phone for a few hrs. (maybe about 2 - 3 hrs)

No way warranty will cover a 4 year old phone I'm afraid.
So anyway just an update. I turned on the phone last night and it immediately heats up again but after about 30 mins of using it, the phone temperature went back to normal. Although, throughout the day I notice that the battery was draining at a quicker pace and heats up more often.
