HELP I uninstalled Kodi and can't reinstall it

I have a major problem. My XBMC Mart MX tv box was acting up. ( Linux 3.14.29-Quad Core Mali 40 0) I uninstalled kodi, thinking I could reinstall it. I did a factory reset.
I now cannot reinstall kodi. When I try to go to google play store on the device, this message pops up - couldn't sign in. There was a problem communicating with Google servers. Try again later
I also went to koditv website and when I click on android nothing happens. I scrolled down to here and clicked on it as I was advised on a facebook kodi help group. got to the apk file from androd - clicked on Kofi 17.1 krypton arm apk. starting download pops up and then disappears with no indicator of progress. Is this normal and if so, how long should it take? I have no way of accessing the download files on the unit because there is no file manager.
I was wondering if I could download the kodi somehow to a usb or SD card and insert that into the kodi to install it.

Check the device's date and time are correct, especially if you've factory reset it. An incorrect date and time can often cause that problem. That can also stop websites connecting as well, if they're using HTTPS, like being unable download.
