The Note 9 would cost me about $6 more a moth though for 24 months. It's got the bigger battery, but is it really necessary ? I'm not on my phone all the time and I'm home every night very normal user a blue collar worker. I don't think I'll ever use the pen either. If the build quality is better with the Note 9 then that's a different story, which I heard nothing about that aspect.

That's a personal preference because you're going to get a lot of conflicting answers on that question. So some may say that there are phones cheaper and better than the note 9 series all together. So I think if you can afford a high-end devices go for it. But Note just because you got a pair of $300 Jordans on won't help you run a Miracle Mile.

i love the NOTE series...
but money is a factor.

and if you are not a power user... then battery is a small point.
these new phones have great power management.
and with quick charge.. it really helps. plug in for 15min

Pen.. this is the big advantage with the NOTE. if you dont need or use it.. you just killed a major argument for it.

size of screen... if you have old eyes.. and need bigger screen.
this this would be your decision maker.

based on the info you gave us... i would suggest for you the S9+

Note.

Bigger battery doesn't only mean a longer day of use. Bigger battery also mean less charging cycles in a given period of time. Your phone probably will last longer at the end, let's say 3 years instead of 2 years.

Based upon what you wrote I can tell you that the note 9 would be a bad investment for you. The note series is designed for the business, medical, legal professional. Someone who has a heavy work load, is multiple tasking constantly and uses their phone almost none stop because of their job.
