HELP Please - Girl character appears, "Ooops! Files Lost". What the HECK???

DAnnFerik

Lurker
I'm a convert from an iPhone to a Note 8 and I can not believe what I'm experiencing. Things seem file, then all the sudden on the lock screen, a cartoon-ish girl in a pink sweater appears with her arms bent in an "I don't know" fashion and out beside her is the message, "Ooops! Files Lost!". This happened twice. First time, I was talking to Verizon support because I couldn't get the phone to respond to any commands, couldn't even turn it off. We had to do a complete restore. He said it sounded like a lemon, so I go back and get the same device. I'm 5-days into it and she appears again!! No lock-ups this time, but I freaked and returned it anyway. I can't imagine having these kinds of problems - messages when the phone is only days old. Has ANYONE EVER seen this message before and WHAT does it mean? I downloaded a virus program, which found nothing. Dang... I loved that phone, but today went back to an iPhone.. But OH I miss that phone and now I want to trade my iPhone back in yet another time to get the Note 8... but I can't have a $1,000 phone doing this days after purchase..!! Any thoughts, experiences, suggestions?? Please help.

Any chance of posting a picture of it, because quite frankly that doesn't sound like what a Samsung device would do. Does the cartoonish girl look manga or anime style?

Two possibilities I can think of:
1) It's a Chinese knock-off Samsung? Where did you buy it?
2) It's ransomware. Is it showing anything about payments, bitcoins, etc. ?

Hi! I got the phone at Sams Club. She looks exactly like an emoji... but obviously larger. The emoji where it is a girl and her arms are in a position that makes you think she's relaying the message of.. "Gee, I don't know." If that helps at all.

alright.

did you download any apps to this phone?

if you did , one of those apps are the culprit.

if you no longer have the note8, there's not much anyone can do.

no i have not seen this issue. never heard of it.

a screenshot would have been most helpful.

Well, thank you! I appreciate that you replied. Boy, do I wish I did a screen shot. I couldn't have done it the first time because the phone wouldn't respond in any way and didn't try the second time. I immediately thought of it being an app the first time. I went app crazy with the first phone, but backed off the apps the 2nd time. That said, it still happened a 2nd time. I use my phone for business a lot and travel extensively (though I went nowhere during the period of time I had the phones). My "usual" apps were downloaded the 2nd time... all the airlines, Hilton, Uber, Lyft, Tripit, bank, etc. No games, screensavers, keyboards, fonts. I wondered about Bixby since it sounds very new... I found a thread somewhere where there were numerous people talking about this particular phone freezing, jerky scrolling and there was an idea that it was something with "contacts"... though at that time, I personally had few. A number of these people also had to do a complete restore from scratch - as I did the first time. I couldn't imagine life for the next couple of years being a series of frequent phone restores. I now have the "X". It's interesting to know what the Note 8 does and compare it against this one. I came from the 6 Plus. I don't get the hype of the X at all. Listening to and reading all the internet reviews, you'd think these Folks had never seen a great screen before. The Note has the best screen I've ever seen in my life. The X? Beautiful, face recognition amazing, Hate the top notch and really miss the ease of fingerprint technology and the way it turns on and off...For all the technology put into it and I have to push a button on both sides of the phone to turn it on and off? It's plain stupid. I can't imagine a room full of people saying, "Yea, that's good, let's go with that". Overall, for my needs, there's not enough difference here to justify a $1,200 purchase. My personal choice? The Note 8 hands down any day!.. but I have so much paranoia attached to it. I am completely torn. I still have time to go back, but that doesn't seem like a rational decision. Thank you for your response.

The malicious program is ZCAMERA

I removed it and have not seen the lock screen since.

Note: Taking a screenshot of a lock screen is difficult if not impossible from the same device. Take a picture with another device and upload that.

It also used 1 GB of data (in a single month) in the background. That meets the definition as Malware and/or Malicious to me.

I got hit by the same girl- several years later.
Samsung S8 Android 7.0
Never had Zcamera installed.

Clearly I installed the wrong app, now I get full screen pop-ups when phone disconnects from charging.
pop-ups say "Oops files lost" or "465 apps consuming memory".
I installed Malwarebytes and a couple of Avast programs, they came up blank.

I would happily pay for an app that shows me how that ad originated, and offered to delete whatever caused the ad to appear.

I think it was S photo editor.
I'll have to see after a day or two...

If you’re having this happen to you, its perhaps some rogue , free app.

Ive had this phone since day one of the first shipment last year and nothing has been popping up that I don’t expect. This device is stock, not rooted and heavily used daily.

Everyone’s phone environment is going to be different from everyone else’s, so anyone who is having an issue should post up exact/detailed specifics to their device and if they can replicate the issue. This can help others attempt to offer a solution.

My "usual" apps were downloaded the 2nd time... all the airlines, Hilton, Uber, Lyft, Tripit, bank, etc.

You are fully aware that Uber's been hacked several times right? and that you've just said you installed a bunch of apps that promote partner affiliates with the ad api's?

I'd bet your experiencing this from one of these
the airlines, Hilton, Uber, Lyft, Tripit, bank, etc.

either that or one of those Ram cleaners or if you ever installed Kingroot etc.
Just saying....

Oh and Iphone SUX LoL!!!

Factory reset. When the option is given to restore apps from google backup choose Not on your nelllie.

Slowly add apps back as needed but avoid 3rd party options. If it appears after a specific app report it.

I had to do a factory reset. I backed up to memory (and including to USB) using Smart Switch. Worked like a charm. Everything went back exactly as before. Folders, desktop browser bookmarks, everything. Only things I lost were wifi pssswords and bought fonts.
