HELP syncing contacts from iPhone to Nexus 5

I can't work it out

I've followed this guide https://plus.google.com/+EricSchmidt/posts/JcfVoJhW2Kw but only my existing gmail contacts have come over none of the iphone ones.

I'm on OSX Mavericks so I can't sync my iPhone contacts to iTunes either so that's not helping things.

I'm stuck.

Can you export your iphone contents from on the phone to the sd card in an excell type file?

Then import with gmail?
