Help - unknown app on daughter's samsung

KeriLyn

Lurker
My daughter is using an old Samsung SM-G925V (no phone number, just wifi) and I have google family link installed so I can monitor her usage and app installs. (I don't have the phone in hand or I would include more info, ie kernel, OS version, etc... sorry!)

I was on my (parent) end of the Family Link app and scrolled through her apps. At the very bottom, I saw this:

First of all, WTF is that? No name, just a symbol... I clicked on "View on Google Play" and it said the app cannot be found. I can't attempt to uninstall it until I have the phone in my hand, but I was able to block it..

I'd like to know what it is and how she got it... And what else to look for... I figured I would ask the place where I would find people with a vast amount of knowledge of these things.

Any info on this app would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

That looks like a simple Notepad application I don't think there's any worries on that

Thank you all so much for your quick responses!

I'm 99.99% sure we went through the phone before giving it to her, and with the Google Family Link I have gone through several times and blocked other apps and don't remember ever seeing this one.

I've looked on both google play and Samsung websites to see if I could find this app. It doesn't appear on either, which further lead me to believe it was some sort of virus app.

I'll have more info when I get the phone in hand (and plan on uninstalling it, if it's not a system app that doesn't allow me to uninstall...)

Does anyone know what this says in Korean?

Thanks again all :)

Being as that is a stock app that came from Samsung themselves it is highly unlikely that you will ever see it in the Google Play Store anyways, FYI. Motorola phones are actually the opposite they use almost all Google apps for stock apps or near all of their stock apps would be found in the Play Store for easier updating.

Further update, is appears this app has been replaced with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.app.notes&hl=en_US in Play, but is probably a system app that was part of the suite of apps (s-memo, etc.) on your phone.
Thank you!! I will try to update with this version, maybe it will uninstall the old one? And, I'm fairly certain, if this app was on her phone since we got it, it did not have Korean characters, I'm wondering if the phone somehow changed the title...

Updating won't allow you to uninstall the old one. It will just allow you to uninstall all updates, which will leave you right where you are. It is most likely a system app, so you may be able to freeze it, but that is it. It is really quite harmless, I'm sure. I use Family Link with my son's phone and since you disabled access to it it is as good as uninstalling it.

If it would make you feel better, check the permissions it has. It may only have read / write permissions to save whatever is written to the device. Maybe internet access is there is a cloud component like syncing to a Samsung account, but from what I read, folks were looking for ways to back up the info, so that leads me to believe it was local storage only.

And of course, with all that entails being a full time working mom with a couple of rugrats, it completely slipped my mind last night. I feel better knowing everyone says it's just an old system app. When I get around to it, I'll check it out but yes, I have disabled it on her phone. Thank you all so much! :D:blushDroid:

The odd thing I think, is its name is in Korean on a US version phone with the system language as English. Samsung are usually very good at completely localising their products for their intended markets.

i don;t know ,why you are so worried about this app,it will not create any problem, but if you wants to remove this strictly, and uninstall button are not showing..first you should take backup data and and click on factory reset..after process you would be get a fresh phone.without any unwanted app.

If it's a system app all that a factory reset will do is erase everything you have set up on the phone, including re-enabling everything that has been disabled, but it will not remove the app in question. So I'm afraid that's the wrong advice for this problem.

Fortunately the app itself seems to be nothing to worry about.
