Lurker
I just upgraded my phone from lollipop to marshmallow and now I can't open the phone , contacts or messaging app, and if it does finally load, the names of the contacts don't show up. Can you please give me a fix without factory resetting it, as this phone is used for my dads work. Thanks!

Don't understand why there should have been an issue there to start with.
Try this:

Power phone off:
3 finger restart;
  • Volume Up
  • Home Key down
  • Power Button held ON

When Blue menu shows up, release buttons, wait for it to stabilize.

Use Volume button to select Clear Cache Partition.

then Restart the phone

A Factory Data Reset is devastating. The logic is ... after you do a major upgrade at sometime you will be forced into a Factory Data Reset. Plan on it and do it when it is least inconvenient.

I use Nova Launcher Prime, Pixel Phone Pro, and Tasker. They each have backup/restore capabilities so restoring my settings across a Factory Data Reset is not a big deal.

You can do the Wipe Cache Partiton at any time and it might resolve your current issues while you decide on the Factory Data Reset. (I do a Wipe Cache Partition on my Droid Turbo 2 every Saturday as part of weekly maintenance.)
