Help with Handcent SMS

Just installed it and don't like the fact that even after you view a new message you still have the text message notification in the notification bar.

I am assuming it's because the phone doesn't recognize you viewed it.

Is there a way to fix this?

have you turned off notifications for the stock messaging app? i suspect you haven't and that is why it's not going away, because you haven't read the message in it.
