help with T-Mobile HD desire

sorry but I am not very good at this sort of stuff

I currently have a HTC desire on contract with T Mobile, I am looking at getting it unlocked as I am going on holiday and want to buy a local payg sim card whilst I am there to keep the cost of calls down.

I will be putting my T mobile sim back in when I return as I am under contract .

My question is if while I am away I loose my phone will I still need to call T Mobile to get a block put on the sim card and will they be able to block the phone leaving it of no use to anybodyelse even though it is unlocked.

Hope I have explaned this ok, just a bit paranoid about things being lost/stolen while in a different country
