Help HERE Maps - surely they can't be *this* bad ?

Having run HERE maps on WP8, it was my Routing App of choice on Android.

Went out with my new phone. Mounted it landscape in car cradle. Call up HERE and ...

ITS IN PORTRAIT! It will *only* switch to landscape once I have set a route. Or so it seems.

Clearly (being a newish user) this is so stupid as to be not-possible. Clearly I am missing a setting somewhere.

So, can anyone explain how to set up HERE Maps to act like they do (perfectly) in WP ?

(Wait till I discover Android lacks "quiet hours" !)

e2a: Google Maps seems a bit better.

Most android versions do include "quiet hours". If not, there are many automation apps (Tasker, Llama, Macrodroid, even simple ones like Timeriffic) that can do that.

As for HERE, it does seem to assume portrait mode and ignore the rotation sensor when in normal use (I just installed it and tested). That is of course an issue with the app rather than Android, so my advice would be to raise it with the app developer.

There's supposed to be some roads around here.

Tx for Timeriffic heads up. Of course I didn't find it in my initial trawl for an app because it manages to avoid using the word "quiet" anywhere on it's App page.

fair point about HERE problem being with the app. I'd love to know what commercial decision (because it's obviously not technical) led to the Windows Phone version being better ?

I have used HERE for a while now and find it really good!
I have only ever used it in portrait mode as I find it gives a good 'view ahead' , never even tried landscape - think I wouldn't be happy with the restricted view ahead.
Why would you want landscape/wide-screen? surely you want to travel forward?

Bully for you. Meanwhile, all satnavs in the world are landscape, so it's hardly surprising I want/expect my App to be the same.

I like my view to be wide, as it puts surroundings into context. As a rule the "nav" bit tends to be used for the last leg of a journey. If you need a satnav to tell you you need the M40 from Harrow to Redditch (for example) you might be better off taking the train.

Dedicated satnav devices can be landscape, however many phone mounts for vehicles are designed to hold the phone vertically, i.e. portrait mode.

You could try it in sideways, i.e. landscape, but there's a chance your phone could go flying during a turn if you haven't got it securely clamped...not good.

Hey! the smog has cleared....I can see roads!! :D

FWIW Baidu Maps only has portrait mode, it ignores the phone's orientation, and it won't tell me where Heathrow Airport is.

I CBA to post a picture of my mount, but it holds my Lumia 620 (work supplied) perfectly in landscape mode.

FWIW Google Maps app works in Landscape from the off. (The HERE maps will go into Landscape once you have set your destination - which isn't how I roll).

I'm sure there's an easy way to transfer my routes from HERE to Google - but even if there isn't, I'm not using an App which goes backwards in functionality.

My good lady wife has just got (Xmas present) an iPad Pro. It's our first exposure to the Apple Kool-Aid, and I look forward to comparing with Android (et ses "Apps" :) )
