Hey there, my monitors been light flickering..

Milo Williamson

Extreme Android User
Did list:
Updated the driver, rolled back, stretched the new settings on it,
unplugged it and replugged it, make sure it was secured within the wall outlet to my comp,
purchased a new power / monitor cord for it a spell ago.
I cleaned out my comp a few times, went to safe mode a few times,
with command prompt.
I did a disc clean up and did the disc defrag..

hmmm... Any sugesstions?

Do you have another computer/laptop to plug it into?

Did you update the graphics driver?

How is it connected to the computer? Did you try a different cable?

I bought a new power cable, I did updated the graphics driver just yesterday, I trippled checked everything.
I can still see my entire desktop and everything..

That is the most strangest thing.

- No I do not have another laptop or comp. to connect it with either.

I saw that you replaced the power cable.

I’m asking about the cable that connects the monitor to the computer, sometimes called the signaling cable. Have you replaced that?

Single monitor man.
NO RYW cable at all..
yeah VGA.
So it’s a single VGA cable? I’d first try unplugging it on both ends and blowing out all four connecting points.

Also, if your PC is VGA, then it’s got to be pretty old. Will it run Win 11? If not maybe think about replacing it; Win 10 goes out of support in October, so the writing is on the wall anyway.

Nothing personal, Milo, but if you are asking for help and people are trying to help you, it is very courteous, helpful and respectful to be sure you are responding to everything they ask you.

Looking at that video card suggests still that your PC MB is pretty old, and from prior posts I seem to recall that you are running Win 10, which goes out of support in October. What that means is that there will be no more patches or security updates or anything, so your computer will be vulnerable on the internet.

Key: Have you run the PC Health Check app on your PC to see if it is capable of running Win 11? If not, please do so by following this link: How to check if your device meets Windows 11 system requirements after changing device hardware - Microsoft Support. If you find out that your system is not compatible and you cannot upgrade your computer and must instead replace it, then from a financial standpoint it makes little sense to buy anything else for this one, even another VGA cable. So, do that first, okay?

Thank you in the first place.
I know it is really old too. Yeah I know that though, but to me Oct is so far away.

Speaking from my own experience, it takes far more time than we realize to build a replacement system, and by “build,” I mean installing and configuring the OS properly, installing and configuring all of the applications, and migrating the data.
If you buy a pre-built PC with the OS installed, that really doesn’t save as much time as we’d like to think, because you have to spend lots of time trying to figure out how to get rid of bloatware as well as “de-configuring” what the manufacturer decided for its systems. (As a former career IT guy I can tell you it is a lot more than a few hours on a weekend. Depending on complexity it could easily take more than a month of a few hours at a time.)

Ideally you also want to take enough time to decide what you want/need and when you then add in the additional time to do all of the rest, October will be here before you know it.

And I appreciate where you are, there are literally millions of people in that boat, and I’m one of them. (The added complication on my end is a wife who hates to spend three dollars, much less hundreds, and who doesn’t appreciate the danger the internet poses to unsecured machines.)

So with that backdrop, how much time and money do you want to (ultimately waste) trying to chase down the flicker on your current system? Since you don’t have another PC/notebook you can’t easily test the monitor, so you’re a little stuck. Do you have a friend who has an older laptop with a VGA-out who could come over and plug into your monitor (using your existing cable)? If so that’s the cheapest and easiest test.

That said, if you can stand at all to live with the flickering, one option would be to spec and source your new tower now. You can plug it in to your monitor (assuming the monitor has modern connection interfaces) and if all is good, then you can start working on the “build” process and take your time since your current system is buggy, but still safe and functional. Far better to do that now and be done with it long before October rather than be time-pressured later (as a procrastinator I know that all too well).

But if you don’t have a friend with a VGA-friendly laptop and you want to struggle with your old box, then find out what other inputs you have on your monitor. If you have DVI or HDMI then I would get a DVI cable (you have a DVI port on your graphics card) and dump that VGA, with adapters (DVI is notoriously picky) that could run thirty bucks, maybe more. If you go that route, pull the graphics card and blast it thoroughly with canned air, as well as the MB interface (hopefully at least PCI-e). Be sure you blast the video connector ends on the card, cable/adapters and the monitor. Then reassemble and see if the flicker is gone. Of course you could instead get a new VGA cable and try cleaning the card as well, but if it’s something in the VGA circuitry you’ll be in the same boat.)

One other thought. Is there an HDMI input on the monitor? If so, do you have anything with an HDMI output? Like a cable TV/satellite box or a DVD player or a gamestation? If so connect that to the monitor and see how it is. If the flicker is gone you know it’s the cable, card or some buried windows setting on your tower.

Good luck.

My tv had an hdmi output, but knowing that I cannot stand any type of silence around, bothers my tinnitus to the completely death itself and I cannot do anything in dead silence like my mother tends to always do. It does have an cable connection with it as well too.

(Really you where an IT guy? What do you do now these days?)
Maybe my brother in law has a back up one just laying around his house, I think he does have one but I will check there other then spending about 10 dollars on one at best buy down here, or a few other places too. It wil be kind of a clunky way on to unplug my pc and set it up for my tv though. (Funny my Mother said the same thing and plug it in to my tv...)

I saw at walmart they had a portable monitor but it was the size of my tablet though.

(Yeah my sister is the same thing, who absoultely hates spending money as much as I do..)
Time is always on my side but hate running to town espcially today I just want a day in..
