Hiding the system dock icons

When I read in Google Books, the system dock icons (back, home, running apps) that always show at the bottom of the screen turn into nice little unobtrusive dots. Is this built in android behavior that can be toggled or some kind of custom skin?

Is there an app that will achieve this dot effect all of the time?, or otherwise hide the system dock icons while keeping them accessible?

I use,"Holo Launcher" app.You can customize the dock in many ways and as a launcher it's superb as you can stack all your favourite apps on one,"Home Screen".Try it for a couple of hours.I couldn't go back to,"Touchwiz" now :)

Hmm... I tried holo launcher but it just seemed to add an extra bar above the existing three icons and reset my desktop icons. Seems like there are a lot of options but none affect those three icons at the bottom of the screen.

Try this.
Soft button left/Launcher Settings/Dock settings/Hide Dock Divider(Enable).
Navigate out to home page. Now swipe left or right on the dock at the bottom and you should be left with a full clear screen.Any time you want your dock items back just swipe back.Hope this gets the effect you want :)

I think Paul misunderstood your question. He is using a Samsung phone so he doesn't have those buttons onscreen. Samsung has the back, home and menu buttons offscreen as physical/capacitive buttons.

As for the buttons, as far as I know, it's default android behavior on any app that identifies itself as "full screen", like videos, reader apps and the like.
