What makes a high end phone a high end phone? Ex: sgs3 is a high end phone right?

Galaxy s3 is definitely a high end device...
For a device to "high end" it has to have the specific components ...: like a high end processor, high end GPU, High end display, hardware & software ...lol personally to me most of the devices over at XDA are high end devices

I think this is actually a good question. I remember when the connect first came out it seemed like a high end phone to me. I guess i was wrong because I had several people tell me how wrong I was because it didn't have this or that and how this phone and that phone was high end. I thought the funny thing was most of the phones they named where pretty close to the connect spec wise. So I think it might actually be a subjective term.

It's the specs & software compared to other premium phones at the time the S3 is considered high end right now but this time next year compared to other premium phones the specs will seem outdated, it has already started to become outdated with all the phones with the Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core processors like the Nexus 4, Droid Razr M, Optimus G and others

a phone that sets technological benchmarks with the latest and greatest technology and features with little to no respect for cost effectiveness.

Lol with current upcoming phones like note 2, nexus 4, optimus G or LG G, one x+ and etc the gs3 is going away from high end, but It still is the "ideal" phone of the year

The gs3 is indeed a high end device considering what it was when it came out. It was a benchmark for it's time.

Technology moves fast with Android so a phone isn't gonna hold the top spot for long.

Top of the line hardware as well as software. The GS3 is still high end due to its software advancements Samsung made.

A phone with a quad core processor, 2GB ram, 12MP+ camera, 720p+ display, 1.9+ front facing camera (720p as well). This will all change in a few months though, you'll see :)
