hotspot / tether

jasf

Newbie
I'm not sure what the difference is but basically:
I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan. I would like to occasionally connect my laptop to the internet through my droid charge. I only need to do this maybe once every other month. A pay as you go type thing is fine, and probably preferred over getting a plan and cancelling

What are my options.

edit: I have the droid charge.

I use wired tethering with the EasyTether app. I purchased the $10 upgrade through PayPal so I can use secured sites via my laptop (banking etc.). They sent me a code to enter, that is tied to my IMEI.
But you can use non-secured for free.

I have grandfathered unlimited data but I'm careful about usage. I don't stream movies or watch tv online. I watch a youtube video here and there, download software updates, etc., so that usually puts me at about 4-5 gb per month. They have not bothered me about it.

I am, however, afraid to install the suggested Verizon update that pops up everytime I tether my phone. It says it'll make verizon work better with my computer, but I don't trust it.
The tether must be "safely removed" afterwards. If you try it, I recommend the data counter widget as well.

Thanks
Yea I'm not trying to use a ton of data, really just wanted to be able to look up a couple of websites on a full lap top while riding the train from Philadelphia to DC

So I called Verizon and was told:

1) mobile hot spot can be activated and deactivated at a prorated $0.66 per day. This also prorates the 2GB

2) tethering can be done at no cost and no change to the plan it just uses your data.

Personally can't believe #2 to be true but thats what she said.

Just to add, if you are grandfathered in to the unlimited data, you can add it for $1 a day and it's unlimited. I've used it a few times the past few months and it's great. I just add it through my online account and remove it when I'm done. If it's active for a few days that's all they charge you for.

How did you order the hotspot and were ensured it was for unlimited data?
