htc Amaze 4G: when I pass my Amaze around friends to look at photos etc, they invariably press the edge buttons accidentily screwing up the phone. How can I temporarily disable the edge buttons?

I would suggest two things for you. Either get a case that has a larger lip round the side that means that you have to meaningfully press the side buttons in order to use them, or get an app called Tasker - Play Store where you can assign different functions to the buttons in question. Please note however that more functionality opens up when you are rooted.
