HOW CAN I GET MY ANDROID MOBILE SOFTWARE UPDATED ?

My name is THOMAS. I am an android user, but honestly do not know about this much. my Motorola droid mobile asks me frequently to update me software, but doesn't inform me how to do it. Can anyone kindly help me out with this and guide me how can I update my mobile software?
I shall be very thankful for this kind gesture.
