Apps How can I measure the distance between cell tower and my phone

I want to write a application to draw those cell towers around me on google map. But unfortunately my teacher didn't allow me to use Google JSON to capture the location of the cell tower.

I want to know if i can get the distance between the cell tower and myself only use the gsm network.

If I can do it, I'll use the Tri-Lateration method inversely to get the location of the tower.
