hey droiders! Total newbie here.. starting with a lot of doubts! :)

For example, how does Waze get the mobile position all the time? It is a huge battery consuption? Is there a way to run in background these kind of applications?

thank you very much!

cheers

MY GPS is almost always on and battery life isnt bad at all.

Having GPS on will not "wreck" your battery in any way shape or form. USING GPS on the other hand, can drain the battery. It's ok to leave it on all the time. Unless it is being actively used(the little sat icon is flashing) then it isn't doing anything to your battery. But if an app is using it constantly(like GPS Navigation) then you are boned.

Biggest drain is when it has to re-aquire a fix like when you haven't used it in a long time or you traveled without it on (eg. on an airplane).

Still... one time GPS wrecked my battery so hard it had to go to a little hospital for batteries for a week! Let me tell you too, dealing with those places is rough. The paperwork is tiny!

Disclaimer: I may have just made that last bit up.

I agree. Once I was using a custom ROM, where GPS was loosing its lock after using it once (fixed only after a reboot). So, I left the GPS on all the time. The result was acceptable and I didn't notice any unusual battery drain.
However, if I start GPS navigation without a charger, then the phone's battery goes empty in just a matter of a few hours.

Unless it's being called upon by an app that actually uses the GPS signal, it's not really a noticeable drain (using Spare Parts to gauge that).

If it's constantly transmitting info (i.e. using Maps, Navigation, Runkeeper, etc.) then yeah it'll eat up your battery a bit. Turning GPS on in the settings and leaving it on throughout the day without such apps running won't do much anything at all though. I honestly can't tell the difference between days that I've left my GPS on, off, or days I remember to turn my Tasker profile on that turns GPS on and off when certain apps are started and ended.
