How do connect to desktop

I have the pixel plugged into my desktop so I can transfer some music files. There are not any folders showing up other than an empty pixel 4. Help!

Do you see a notification on your phone? You'll need to tap that and select how you want the USB connection to be used. The default is charging only.

What kind of cable are you using? There are some cables that are charge only as well, so there will never be a data connection.

USB to c. It works fine with my pixel 3. Not the pixel 4

I just took my less-than-6-hour-old Pixel 4 XL and plugged it into a PC that has never seen ANY smartphone before (Windows 10 1903) and there was indeed no immediate notification about charging or data transfer. However when I pulled down the menu from the top, charging options was there.
