How Do I Add Gmail Contacts To My Phone?

So I have my gmail synced to my HTC Inspire. I get my emails and folders synced to my phone just fine. I noticed the other day that my email contacts are not in my phone. While on my phone, I go to compose and start to type in someone's name, the email address doesn't autofill. I have to type in the entire email address. Not on some but for most of them I do.

Check your Gmail account through the web interface (gmail.com). If your contacts are in the "Contacts" section of your Gmail account, then they should appear on your phone.

I'm in no way being an a** but where else would my contacts be if not listed under contacts? I don't understand.

EDIT: Ok, I'm getting a syncing error. In "Accounts & Sync" under my gmail account 'sync contacts' it says... sync is currently experiencing problems. It shows the last time my contacts was sync'd was back in March. I think I had my Contacts sync unchecked this whole time. When I finally checked the box, I got the error.

It's still syncing my email just not my contacts. Weird.
